Working together for the sickest patients in South-East London and surrounds
We’re an eclectic mix of senior ICU nurses, airway trained registrars from ICU and anaesthetics, and ambulance crews from our partner BEARS. We are all working at London trusts and helping with this on off days.
We are supported by our hub office at Guy’s and St Thomas‘ and a consultant of the day who provides clinical support and vets referrals.
In March 2020, as covid reared up in SE London, we found the DGH ICUs overflowing to recovery and theatres while Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s had capacity to spare. Having cancelled all of their significant major surgical cases, the teaching hospitals had many more spare anaesthetic teams, but much smaller and younger patient catchment areas. The service began with Pete Beaumont in the back of a stripped out ambulance with borrowed kit, and he was a very welcome sight to stressed ICU teams around London.
Now, no creation myth is ever this simple, and it sounds like the consultants who run SPRINT actually had this up their sleeves for a while, but it did look an awful lot like magic at the time.
We alI know how difficult it can be to organise and provide a clinically appropriate intensive care transfer. We were all so grateful for the transfer service during Covid and we think it’s something we could all do better.
Check out who is part of our collaboration! We’re proud of South East London for working together for safe critical care transfers
